Diversity Exercises |

InterPlay's unique approach to diversity training incorporates theatre games
and activities to help stimulate open communication and the creative process.
Why theatre? Actors explore their emotions, personalities, thinking patterns,
objectives, surrounding environment and given circumstances. Actors must also
share their environment with others. They must be open enough to allow for
honest reactions. They must believe in themselves enough to commit to a sincere
performance that will be believed by the audience.
All of these theatre concepts can be applied to diversity training and development. The theatre games and exercises provide effective diversity training methods in work, school and community environments. The activities can also open new doors to communication, encourage individuality and increase productivity. Our One-Minute Wanders exercise is a great example of an interactive approach to diversity issues. Each participant is asked to write a topic on a piece of paper that focuses on a specific issue, such as diversity. For example, a participant may write, "Discrimination inhibits progress because. . ." The papers are then folded up and placed in a container. Next, each participant takes a turn drawing one of the topics and talking about it for one minute. The observers say nothing, but simply listen and take in what is said. This type of exercise encourages an open forum of communication and allows participants to express their ideas and feelings on the issue at hand.
