Bullying "Hot Spots"

How prevalent is bullying in schools? While statistics may vary, experts all agree that the number is staggering. Some research indicates that one out of four children is bullied regularly. Even more surprising is that one out of five children defines him or herself as a bully. When so many youth are involved, the consequences of the cycle of bullying influence even the simplest activities, like walking to class or using the restroom. Most victims of bullying try to avoid “hot spots” like cafeterias, restrooms, and stairwells; some even avoid school altogether, increasing absenteeism and jeopardizing academic success.

Changing the behavior of self-defined “bullies” is challenging, but can be done. InterPlay workshops and trainings can involve students, staff, faculty, and parents in working toward understanding, teamwork, and bullying prevention. Hands-on activities and interactive performances engage everyone in dialogue and problem-solving.
